On 7 August 2024, UEFA’s Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body imposed a 1-match ban on each of Álvaro Borja Morata, the Spanish national team captain, and Martín Rodrigo Hernández Cascante (or ‘Rodri’, as he is professionally known).
The decision was made on the recommendation of UEFA’s Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector, following the recent Euros 2024 final. During victory celebrations in Madrid, the players started a chant of “Gibraltar es Español” (“Gibraltar is Spanish”). UEFA found that the Players’ conduct was in violation of Article 11 of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations, which mandates respect for the principles of ethical conduct, loyalty, integrity and sportsmanship, and prohibits actions that insult and violate basic rules of decent conduct, or use sporting events for non-sporting manifestations.
