Former Lord Chief Justice joins Blackstone Chambers

Lord Burnett of Maldon, the former Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales, will join Blackstone Chambers on 1 February 2024. He plans to conduct inquiries and investigations, as well as to sit as an arbitrator and to mediate.
In November 2023, following his retirement from his role as Lord Chief Justice, Lord Burnett was appointed as Chief Justice of the Astana International Financial Centre (AIFC) Court in Kazakhstan.
Lord Burnett became a Judge in 2008. He was appointed to the Court of Appeal in 2014. In July 2017, at the age of 59, he became the youngest Lord Chief Justice to be appointed since 1958.

Lord Burnett said: “I am looking forward to working with colleagues in Blackstone Chambers on new ventures after six years as Lord Chief Justice.”
Lord Burnett was called to the Bar in 1980 and became a silk in 1998. His final case at the Bar, before joining the High Court Bench, was as Counsel to the inquests into the deaths of Diana, Princess of Wales and Dodi al Fayed.
